Whitewater Safari

Enjoy Costa Rica’s finest rivers on this thrilling whitewater safari that begins with the pristine waters of the Division and Savegre Rivers and ends with an adrenaline-filled two day adventure on the class III and IV rapids of the world-famous Pacuare River, named one of National Geographic’s “Best Rivers in the World.” Stay in comfortable and intimate river camps/lodges along the riverbanks during the rafting portions of the trip.  Between river trips, choose from a wide variety of activities in the Manuel Antonio region, including surfing, hiking, swimming, zip-lining, horseback riding, rafting, mangrove kayaking, river tubing, sunset sailing, or simply relaxing at the beach.

Day 1. Land in San Jose, transfer to Manuel Antonio for overnight.

Day 2. Following breakfast we will drive through the mountains to the small town of El Llano, where our whitewater adventure begins.  We will paddle the continuous class III and IV rapids of the Rio Division, leading into the upper Savegre River, one of the most pristine rivers in all of Central America.  Enjoy impressive views of the lush primary rainforest before ultimately arriving by raft to the “Rafiki Safari Lodge, where we will spend a peaceful night in luxury safari tents with private baths and fire-heated hot water showers. Overnight in Rafiki Safari Lodge.

Day 3. Continue rafting along the class II and III rapids of the Rio Savegre. Overnight in Manuel Antonio

Day 4-5 Experience the stunning beauty and biodiversity of the Manuel Antonio National Park, choose from a wide variety of activities, including surfing, hiking, swimming, zip-lining, horseback riding, mangrove kayaking, river tubing, sunset sailing, or simply relaxing at the beach. Day 4 overnight in Manuel Antonio, day 5 overnight in San Jose

Day 6.  Depending on  energy level we’ll start our day hiking from the Orosi valley into Turrialba region for about 4hrs or paddle the Pejibaye River along a beautiful natural corridor with class III rapids. Overnight in Turrialba region

Day 7. After a short drive and upon reaching the end of the road, we’ll load our river gear on horses and head upstream of the Pacuare river by foot for about 2 hrs. into Cabecar country where we will stop for lunch and gear up to head downstream. Overnight in Turrialba region

Day 8. Travel to the Pacuare River where you will begin another 2-day rafting adventure on a river listed among National Geographic’s best rivers of the world. Begin your rafting adventure with a short day on the upper Pacuare, and in between rapids enjoy lush vegetation, a wide variety of wildlife (such as monkeys, sloths, ocelots, and a variety of birds), waterfalls, pools, and a pristine rainforest.

Overnight in riverbank lodge.

Day 9. More whitewater action! Raft more of the lower Pacuare including Pacuare canyon and the famous Dos Montañas gorge (approximately 3 hours on class III-IV rapids). Return to the central valley.

Overnight in San José

Day 10. Return flight home.
